WASTE & RECYCLING CENTRE- BRIDGE OF DON
Aberdeen City Council is building a modern, enlarged waste and recycling centre in Bridge of Don, designed by Fairhurst and delivered by Chap Group( Aberdeen) Ltd, to boost capacity, improve user experience, and support the city’ s Net Zero ambitions.
Work has begun on a state of the art Household Waste and Recycling Centre( HWRC) in Bridge of Don, replacing the ageing Scotstown Road facility with a purpose designed site at Claymore Drive.
Commissioned by Aberdeen City Council and designed by Fairhurst, the new centre is being delivered by Chap Group( Aberdeen) Ltd, whose £ 3.5 million contract covers all aspects from surfacing to the reuse shop and welfare facilities.
The upgraded centre will be significantly larger, with an improved layout and expanded capacity for a wider range of materials, bringing it in line with amenities at the council’ s flagship Hazlehead site. Customers will benefit from a dedicated Reuse Shop— where items in good condition can be donated or purchased— encouraging circular economy principles by extending the useful life of household goods. The design also provides better accessibility for residents and improved welfare and safety provisions for staff.
Fairhurst’ s role has been pivotal in optimising the design to meet sustainability goals, reflecting the council’ s Climate Change Plan and Net Zero Aberdeen strategy. Their civil and structural expertise ensures efficient drainage, surfacing, retaining walls, fencing, and soft landscaping are all integrated seamlessly into site operations.
Chap Group mobilised in September 2024, with the aim of completing the new centre by spring 2025— ready to open to the public ahead of summer. Their work scope includes surfacing, external services, fencing, drainage systems, the build-out of the Reuse Shop, and a dedicated welfare building for staff. This modern infrastructure is designed to streamline traffic flow, enhance on site safety, and improve overall operational efficiency.
From a sustainability and community standpoint, the facility marks a significant upgrade. Residents will now have a onestop location to dispose of a broad range of recyclables—
