Steven Gregory, Area Director at Morgan Sindall Construction, described the structural completion as“ a significant milestone and a testament to the collaborative effort of everyone involved,” noting the project’ s potential to“ have a profound and lasting impact … across Liverpool and beyond.” Alder Hey CEO John Grinnell called the build a symbol of“ ambition, partnerships, and our belief in a better future for every child,” underlining the hospital’ s clinical and community aspirations.
Work on the extension began in April 2024, following careful planning which ensured continuity of hospital operations throughout. Now that structural works are complete, the focus has shifted to interior fit-out, mechanical and electrical systems installation, and testing of clinical spaces. Formal handover is anticipated in 2026.
When complete, the extension will position Alder Hey at the forefront of paediatric surgical and emergency care. It will streamline urgent and elective care pathways, reduce cross site transfers for neonatal surgery, and introduce standard-setting family integrated spaces.
The project demonstrates how modern healthcare infrastructure can converge with compassionate clinical design and strategic funding to improve outcomes for the region’ s youngest patients.
