ALDER HAY CHILDRENS HOSPITAL- NEONATAL UNIT EXTENSION

Morgan Sindall is delivering a major extension at Alder Hey Children’ s Hospital, set to provide a new surgical neonatal unit and upgraded emergency care facilities by 2026.
Liverpool’ s Alder Hey Children’ s Hospital is nearing completion of a major extension that will house both a new surgical Neonatal Intensive Care Unit( NICU) and expanded emergency care services.
Constructed by Morgan Sindall, the 33,000 sq ft extension marks a significant milestone in the hospital’ s long-term development strategy. As of early June 2025, the structural framework was fully in place, confirming the project’ s readiness to progress into fit-out and commissioning stages for its 2026 launch.
The extension occupies a critical role within Alder Hey’ s wider Children’ s Health Campus, situated adjacent to Springfield Park. On the ground floor, emergency services will be reconfigured around a 16 bed assessment unit, a colocated Urgent Treatment Centre, a Same Day Emergency Care facility, and a combined Paediatric Admission and Emergency Decisions unit. Above it, the new surgical NICU will provide specialist care for newborns requiring surgery, featuring advanced staffing and design partnerships established through the Liverpool Neonatal Partnership. A key aim for the NICU is to deliver family-centred care. It will include single-cot rooms with en-suite parent bedrooms— believed to be the first of their kind in the UK— allowing families to stay close to their infants during critical stages. This is complemented by emergency care upgrades intended to reduce waiting times and optimise patient flow by enabling children to be seen directly by the right clinical team.
The project is financed through a mix of capital funding, with Alder Hey receiving £ 9 million via the national Urgent and Emergency Care Scheme and an additional £ 1 million from its charity. The charity itself has contributed over £ 3 million towards enhancements and equipment for the NICU. The multidisciplinary team includes Liverpool Women’ s Hospital, clinicians from Alder Hey, Morgan Sindall as construction partner, and architectural oversight by the hospital’ s in-house development group.
