The new North Shields Transport Hub which formally opened in early September 2023 is North Tyneside Council ’ s first net zero carbon building . Fairhurst were delighted to be part of this £ 12m project which incorporates sustainable material and energy efficient systems into the design , aligning with the Council ’ s aim to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030 . The project aims to provide a catalyst to regenerate North Tyneside into an attractive , family-friendly destination . The hub brings all bus services to one location in the town , bringing them closer to the Metro , taxis and newly constructed cycling infrastructure , thus improving links between the town centre , Fish Quay and wider region .
Fairhurst were appointed to provide civil , structural , geo-environmental and highways design services for the project . Through the provision of our multi-disciplinary services , Fairhurst were able to offer a coordinated and cohesive approach from concept design through to construction . In order to achieve the full benefits of the design and build contract , Fairhurst worked closely with the design partners and regularly engaged with the Main Contractor , stakeholders and supply chain throughout the course of the project . Consequently , Fairhurst were able to enhance design proposals throughout the project to reduce the total embodied carbon by over 50 %.
At the recent annual Institution of Structural Engineers ( Northern Counties ) awards , Fairhurst were successful in winning three prestigious awards for this project in the categories of Large Project , Zero Carbon Project and Most Collaborative Project . The Zero Carbon category is awarded for exemplary projects which demonstrate zero – or negative – carbon design in both embodied carbon in the structure and the operational requirements of the project .
