Positions for Birthing

These positions may be beneficial at any point in your Birthing Time to provide comfort and rest , while opening the pelvis and allowing your birthing to progress . They may be especially helpful if there is discomfort in the back . For added comfort , use heat , massage , counter pressure or hip squeezes during birthing waves .

Pushing Positions

Kneeling over birth ball
Sitting backwards on chair or toilet
Gravity Neutral
These positions are less challenging for tired mothers while still allowing maximum opening of the pelvis .
• Hands and knees
• Side lying
Using Gravity
These positions provide maximum opening of the pelvis and may help bring baby down more effectively .
• Asymmetric kneel
• Full squat
• Dangle / semi-squat
Please note : Lying back in a recumbent or lithotomy position ( not pictured ) opposes gravity and may increase the likelihood of tearing and make the pushing stage longer .
