CURRICULUM GUIDE 2014 DISCUSSION GROUPS Discussion groups will run whenever there are three or more students in a specific age group (Junior, Senior, or Adult) interested in attending. Discussion groups are available to students both in and outside of the Academy. For Academy students, discussion groups are worth a half credit. Students in other schools may be able to obtain transfer credits. NOVEL STUDY (LANNS) A student, TA, or teacher-led discussion group that allows participants to engage in a discussion of a previously agreed-upon novel, in their own time. No prerequisites. Separated by age group, not by grade level. Novel content should be reviewed directly by a parent or guardian as texts are student-chosen rather than school approved. POETRY STUDY (LANPS) A student, TA, or teacher-led discussion group that allows participants to engage in a discussion of previously agreed-upon poetry, in their own time. No prerequisites. Separated by age group, not by grade level. Content should be reviewed directly by a parent or guardian as texts are student-chosen rather than school approved SCIENCE SURVEY (SCIOS) Students enrolled in this course will have the chance to discuss new technologies and advances in the sciences, express their opinions on the applications of technologies, and begin to understand the practical discussion that is an integral portion of the scientific process. PRACTICAL MATH DISCUSSION (MATHS) A long awaited discussion group that allows students as well as industry professionals to discuss current advances in the field of mathematics, practical applications of math, and the difference mathematicians are making in the world. Highly recommended for students who are also taking MATH: Practical Mathematics. GEOGRAPHY AND TRAVEL (GEOS) Students enrolled in this course will learn the history of travel and tourism, discuss new advances in the field of Geography, and fully engage in environmental learning while developing their understanding of animals, political regions, and mapping technologies. HISTORY SURVEY (HISTOS) Students interested in Historical, Paleontological, and Anthropological discoveries, both new and old, can join this discussion group. With a focus on new information and local historical information and photography, this is a wonderful teacher-led discussion for every student interested in knowing more about our world’s past. KNITTING/CRAFT CLUB (KNIOS) Swap patterns, learn new techniques, and find new patterns while interacting with other crafters in a multi-craft environment. This student or teacher-led discussion group also helps students learn to produce craft and knitted works for sale or donation. Every year, we set a goal of donating a certain number of pieces, within our own communities, to help others. VOLUNTEERISM (VOLTS) Students who are volunteering or looking for volunteer jobs within their communities, volunteers, and volunteerdriven organizations can join the volunteerism discussion group to discuss opportunities, favorite volunteer positions, experiences while volunteering, and positive gains to the community in a friendly discussion environment. 11
