POPCORN ENGLISH II: READING THEATRE
(LANPT)
Beginning just after Shakespeare, students will examine contemporary and historical theatrical productions and the
ways that stage writers have used their craft to bridge the gaps in cultural and socio-economic understanding.
POPCORN ENGLISH III: READING TELEVISION
(LANPL)
This course is designed as an introductory level of television history, appreciation, and techniques. Students will
learn to interpret a variety of genres, both critically and technically. Students will also learn to decode differences
between elements relevant to the thematics of the show and those added for advertising and culture creation
purposes. The course will touch upon the ways and reasons that television continues to be used as a medium of
advertising and culture creation while film, the theatre and most recently the internet have become critical of the
practice.
POPCORN ENGLISH IIII: LET’S PARTY!
(LANPR)
A survey course discussing the portrayal of a “party culture” in movies, television, and film with the purpose of
creating a belief in young people that “nothing bad will happen” if they make poor choices. Using exerpts from a
variety of visual media, students will examine consequences and the lack thereof, the portrayal of schools within the
media, and the likely consequences of behavior approaching that portrayed. The course will touch upon the
motivation for visual media companies to continue producing this type of text.
