Grammar Rules Can
Change
If you are like me, you probably have memories of your high
school teachers - positive, inspiring, and sometimes negative. My
tenth grade English teacher is
perhaps the one I remember
most vividly. Let's just call her
Mrs. E.
Mrs. E was a living and walking grammar book. Her mission
was to instill the rules of proper
English in her students so that
they could express themselves
correctly both in speech and in
writing. Today I still recall the
three “Never” rules that topped
her list.
Rule Number One was never
say hey because, as she sternly
reminded us, “hey is for horses.”
Although we never dared utter
this unacceptable exclamation in
class, we often said hey in the
hallways. If Mrs. E happened to
be nearby, she would tut disapprovingly and ask us where the
horses had gone. As soon as she
stepped into her classroom, we
whinnied like the horses she was
looking for.
