Cohen Palm Aire Resident By: Dr. Joanie McConnell Grammar Rules Can Change If you are like me, you probably have memories of your high school teachers - positive, inspiring, and sometimes negative. My tenth grade English teacher is perhaps the one I remember most vividly. Let's just call her Mrs. E. Mrs. E was a living and walking grammar book. Her mission was to instill the rules of proper English in her students so that they could express themselves correctly both in speech and in writing. Today I still recall the three “Never” rules that topped her list. Rule Number One was never say hey because, as she sternly reminded us, “hey is for horses.” Although we never dared utter this unacceptable exclamation in class, we often said hey in the hallways. If Mrs. E happened to be nearby, she would tut disapprovingly and ask us where the horses had gone. As soon as she stepped into her classroom, we whinnied like the horses she was looking for. continued on page 13 >
