the ancient buildings are a museum.
Beaune's historic walled center contains battlements, ramparts, and a moat. Since Beaune has only
25,000 residents, visitors find a retreat, replete with
Burgundy's fine fare: Jura cheeses, truffles, and
Dijon's mustards, along with the world's finest Pinot
Noir and Chardonnay.
Every November, Beaune hosts a three-day wine
and food festival (Les Trois Glorieuses). A charity
wine auction, begun in 1859, is held on the third
Sunday. The non-profit Domaine des Hospices de
Beaune owns 150 acres of vineyards, 75 percent of
which produce Grand and Premier cru wines. Burgundy's wines, favored by Charlemagne, are revered
by modern oenophiles.
The November 20, 2016, wine auction, managed
by Christie's, is open to the public. Special auction
events attract a glamorous crowd. For centuries, the
Hospices de Beaune has received prayerful gratitude
and charitable generosity. Today, Beaune bestows
upon all a wealth of cultural experiences.
Start packing. The world is waiting to meet you.
