For friends and natives approaching England by sea, the cliffs are a welcoming beacon. Seventy million years ago, during the Cretaceous period, much of Britain was submerged. Black streaks in the cliffs are due to the remains of sea sponges, and of quartz sil- ica associated with the decay of marine life. Dover’s cliffs, stretching more than 8 miles in length, are landing points for birds crossing the Eng- lish Channel. Ravens, jackdaws, peregrine falcons, skylarks, gulls (fulmars), swallows, house mar- tins, and the black-legged kitti- wake are visitors.
