Your willingness to listen makes the speaker understand that you would like to open a dialogue . Such behavior jump-starts communication .
Communication is a two-way exchange based on speaking and listening . When you speak , you express what you know , want , think , or fear . When you listen , you understand what the other person knows , wants , thinks , or fears . Listening is more difficult than speaking because you have to put yourself in that person ' s situation . You have to look at the world from a different perspective .
There are many reasons why people don ' t listen . Sometimes they are so puffed up with their own importance that they have no interest in anybody else ' s ideas . Sometimes they are so self-centered that they think the world revolves around them . Sometimes they are so opinionated that they expect others to agree with them .
Other times - perhaps more often than you would expect - poor listeners are afraid of communication . As long as they keep on talking , they do not have to express their ideas or reveal their feelings . Talking hides their fear , and thus acts as a protective shield .
At home and at school , children learn how to speak , read and write , but rarely how to listen . In daily life , people talk a lot , but often forget to listen to what others say . No wonder there are so many communication breakdowns ! continued on page 21 >
