Learn To Listen
My father had a special way with people. His warm smile and relaxed manner immediately made them feel comfortable. He would make the grumpiest individuals smile and the most timid ones speak. He always said the right word at the right moment. I really admired him. For years, I was convinced that his success with people depended on his speaking skills, but I was mistaken.
Before I went off to college, my father gave me some advice that surprised me. The key to success with people, he told me in a calm, reassuring voice, is learning how to listen. You learn more from listening, he explained, than from talking. If you are a good listener, people
will feel at ease with you, and then will open their hearts. His wise words have served me well, and have helped me become a better communicator.
In graduate school, I received the same advice from my thesis professor, a world-famous expert in communication. In his opinion, listening promotes social harmony. When you listen, he told me, you not only receive the other person ' s spoken message but also have time to process it.
