demanded with a mighty roar,
“What are you doing?” Calmly
she replied in a sweet voice, “I'm
just doing my part. Every drop of
water can help put out the fire.”
Mr. Bear lowered his head in
shame as he listened to her
words. Despite her tiny size, he
understood that her courage was
enormous. So without a minute
to lose, he urged all the animals
and birds to follow Ms. Hummingbird's example and do their
part. Thanks to their coordinated
efforts, they extinguished the fire
before dusk.
By working
together, they saved their home.
Some people think that legends and fairytales are created
only for children.
They are
wrong. Underneath the simple
narrative, there are important lessons on life for both children and
adults alike. As this story illustrates, the contribution of every
individual, no matter how small
or grand she or he may be,
counts. Likewise, every individual,
no matter how humble or important she or he may be, has the
responsibility to do her or his
part.
Without collaboration, it is difficult, if not impossible, to protect
the good of the community.
Then things can go wrong. If all
the animals and birds had not
worked together, the fire might
have destroyed their home. Likewise, unless we work together,
we will have to live with the consequences of our irresponsible
behavior.
So please remember the
advice of the tiny hummingbird,
and like her, do your part.
