As the angry flames quickly spread, smoke filled the
air. The animals and the birds were terrified, and ran
away to escape the danger. When they finally
reached a safe spot, they looked out at the forest.
Sadness filled their hearts as they saw how the
flames were destroying their home.
All of a sudden the big brown bear, who considered himself king of the forest, noticed that the
lovely little hummingbird was not there with the
others. He was worried, and wondered what had
happened to her. When he saw her fly out of the
burning forest, he exclaimed with joy. “She's alive.”
Mr. Bear thought that Ms. Hummingbird would join
her friends and rest, but he was mistaken. Instead
the tired, smoke-covered little bird went to the
nearby pond, took some water in her bill, and flew
back into the forest. All the animals were surprised
when, a few minutes later, she returned, gathered
more water, and went back into the burning forest.
The great bear, puzzled and even a bit irritated by
Ms. Hummingbird's seemingly inexplicable behavior,
