deserves to be called a shark.
When a situation gets really messy, you may
exclaim with frustration that it’s a fine kettle of fish. If
you’re a wise businessperson, you won’t waste your
time and energy on unimportant matters or boring
people. After all, you have bigger fish to fry. And if
you’re really smart, you’ll clam up when an employee
gets too nosey.
The first time I experienced the morning commute
in Tokyo, I exclaimed Holy mackerel ¬– though I
would have preferred a stronger expletive. Now I
never take the subway at rush hour because I hate
being packed in like sardines.
It’s time to get out of the wet world of fish,
and look at some of the bad and ugly creatures on
land. They too have made contributions to English,
most of which - as is to be expected – are uncompli-
mentary.
It’s always frustrating when there’s so much traffic
that you can only move at a snail’s pace. Nobody
likes hypocrites. Their crocodile tears are proof of
