Perón. Eva (1919-1952), wife of Dictator Juan
Perón, and First Lady of Argentina from 1946-1952,
was the beloved political champion of the poor. She
died at age 33. Her body, once stolen in 1955, and
hidden in Milan and in Madrid, was interred in BA 24
years later, under 27 feet of concrete.
“ HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!!!”
Floral tributes are ever present [see photo] at the
Duarte mausoleum. Juan Perón is interred in Char-
carita cemetery; his body was desecrated, with
hands cut off.
The Perón regime had its detractors: the press
was silenced, revenge upon “enemies” was com-
mon, and tax extortion was toler-
ated. “Evita” was seen by many
as an actress (her profession),
skilled at manipulating the disen-
franchised (and devoutly reli-
gious) poor.
In front of La Recoleta Ceme-
tery is the Basilica de Nuestra
Senora Del Pilar, the 2nd oldest
church in BA (dating from1732),
and, arguably, the most beautiful.
The plain white colonial exterior,
built as part of a Franciscan
monastery, belies a rich Baroque
and Rococo interior. The side
altars venerate saints, including
Mother Teresa. Services are still
held, employing the church’s pipe
organ. A museum of religious
artifacts and remaining cloisters
Palm-Aire Resident
can be visited.
