At one time, “Rich as an Argentine” conveyed the
standing of a nation made rich by exports of grain
and cattle (meat). By 1913, Argentina’s GDP repre-
sented 50% of all of Latin America’s. Ranked 10th in
the global economy, Argentina’s per capita income
then exceeded France’s and Italy’s, and was five
times that of Japan’s.
Argentina’s fortunes have changed, but its capital,
Buenos Aires (“BA”), the “Paris of the South,”
remains culturally rich. The adage holds: “BA’s
architecture is French, its language is Spanish, its
people are Italian.”
