Rosy hues, long the province of Western femininity and childhood, represent hospitality in India. Nowhere is this more evident than in Jaipur (J’eye pour), the capital of Rajasthan, in northern India. In 1876, to prepare for the visit of Prince Albert, consort of Queen Victoria, Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh literally painted the town - pink. By 1877 decree, all buildings, walls, and structures were painted a welcoming terra cotta rose (a law yet observed). Further, to honor the 17-week visit of the British monarch, Albert Hall was constructed. Today, the Hall, a model of Indo-Saracenic architecture, functions as Rajasthan’s State Museum. For most visitors, the Hawa Mahal of Jaipur, or Palace of the Winds, built in 1799, is memorable because it rises from the teeming city streets. Hawa means “air” in Hindi; Mahal is “palace.” The 953 win- dows (jarokhas) of the façade allowed royal women to view events and festivals behind a magnificent 5- story, 49-foot high screen [see photo]. The façade was constructed because the laws of purdah prohibited a woman from displaying her face in public. The windows provided breezes, too, essential in a city where summer temperatures could reach 104F. continued on page 12 > 11 Podiatrist The Treatment of: • Warts • Fungus Nails • Callouses • Corns • Orthotics • Bunions • Foot & Ankle Pain FREE EXAM & CONSULTATION A $150 Value X-rays not included Exp.02-28-2019 New Patients Only Medicare Provider • Most Insurances 159 S.
