Closed Currents Unfortunately not all young Japanese men share their vision. As a result, it's not surprising that many young Japanese women, especially the college-educated ones, are delaying marriage and sometimes even rejecting it. These women want to combine work, freedom, respect and fun. Many feel that having children may not fit into their life plans. Observing this growing trend among the younger Japanese, the government is concerned about the adverse economic effects of a declining population in an ageing society. In short, the future of Japan could be at risk. Despite the Cassandra-like warnings of doom and gloom, many Japanese “girls” - and here I am including all ages groups - are refusing to conform to “traditional” values. They believe in their dreams for a more equal future which includes having fun - something that their mothers and grandmothers never imagined and certainly never enjoyed. Now back to the theme of girls having fun. One of the latest trends in Japan is Joshikai, the Japanese equivalent of “Girls' Night.” As often is the case with celebratory activities, the Japanese have the special ability to redefine a simple event and transform it into something unique. Today Joshikai is more sophisticated than Girls' Night in the US. Many restaurants, especially in Tokyo, are offering a variety of tantalizing options for “girls” who want to have fun. These choices range from a sophisticated modern Japanese menu to a causal after-work pub serving drinks (nomi-houdai = all you can drink) and food. From experience, I can assure you that Joshikai is a wonderful way to spend a night out with the girls. These evening are great fun - so much so that the boys would like to join in too! But for now, Joshikai is for girls only!
