Filmmaker Woody Allen, deeming Oviedo a “fairy tale,” chose it as backdrop for “Vicky Cristina Barcelona.” Indeed, Oviedo, often dubbed the cleanest town in Europe, is both exotic and charming. Oviedo lies between the Cantabrian Mountains and the Bay of Biscay in Asturias. Asturias, an autonomous region in Spain, was home to ancient Celts centuries before the Muslims and Christians began their conquests and reconquests. Oviedo’s history is one of battles, political intrigues, and rebel- lions.
