Workers Compensation: Provides expanded benefits to first responders who have job-related posttraumatic stress disorder. In Florida, injured workers can ' t obtain workers ' compensation benefits for mental or nervous injuries.
Living Facilities: Requires assisted living facilities to have backup power sources, ratifying a rule issued by Gov. Rick Scott after Hurricane Irma. It would cost the state ' s 3,000 assisted living facilities about $ 243 million to comply.
Armed Staff: Withholds the identities of armed school staff who are trained as part of the state ' s new " guardian " program.
Nursing Homes: Requires nursing homes to have backup power sources that can control indoor temperatures for 96 hours after an outage and sets the ambient temperature at 81 degrees.
The 2018 Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday: The legislation creates a seven-day“ disaster preparedness” sales tax holiday from June 1 to June 7, 2018, for disaster preparedness supplies. Tax-free items include: flashlights and lanterns costing $ 20 or less; radios and tarps costing $ 50 or less; coolers costing $ 30 or less; and, generators costing $ 750 or less, among others. And creates a three-day“ backto-school” sales tax holiday from August 3 to August 5, 2018, for clothing, footwear, and backpacks costing $ 60 or less, and school supplies costing less than $ 15.
Reduces Business Rent Tax: The legislation permanently lowers the sales tax charged on commercial leases. In 2017, the Legislature lowered the six percent tax on the total rent or license fee charged for renting any real property from 6 percent to 5.8 percent and now 5.7 percent. Florida remains the only state in the country to impose this type of tax on businesses.
The biggest tax relief will go to homeowners. The Legislature agreed to decrease property-tax rates to offset a rise in home values that would have caused many homeowners to pay more in taxes. That will save homeowners in Florida a combined $ 510 million in increased property taxes.
