the students collected information from various
sources - articles, photos and even the author's death
mask. They analyzed the voice of Soseki's grandson
so they could re-create the author's voice. Then they
programmed the robot to speak and also to read
excerpts from Soseki's works.
On December 8, 2016 - the eve of the centennial
- the Soseki robot was officially introduced to an
eager, enthusiastic audience. Everybody recognized
the “reborn” author immediately because his picture
had appeared on the old version of the 1,000 yen
banknote.
The seated robot is about 51 inches tall. Dressed
in a brown tweed suit, shirt and jaunty tie, Soseki
looks about 45 years old. He is even sporting his
trademark moustache. As part of the presentation,
the Soseki robot gave the audience a warm wel-
come. “Long time, no see, everyone,” he com-
mented. Then in a mildly joking voice, he thanked
them for waiting about 100 years for the meeting
that evening.
