percent of the 11,000 year-round residents.
In the 1930s, Davos emerged as a winter sports
mecca. Along with nearby Klosters, Davos offers 200
miles of ski runs. Davos is the Swiss capital of snowboarding (50 miles of trails), hosts the annual Spengler Cup ice hockey tournament, and has the largest
natural ice skating area in Europe.
Summer visitors can golf, hike, rock climb, or
explore on horseback. There are many non-athletic
distractions: a botanical garden, a museum featuring
Expressionist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, 15th and 16thcentury churches, and Monstein Brewery tours. In
nearby Chur, the Bernina Express runs south to
Tirano, on the highest railway in the Alps. Davos is
only 2 hours 13 minutes from Zurich by train ($74).
