Davos As Destination
Davos again proved a gracious host for the 46th
World Economic Forum. In January 2016, some
2,500 world influencers, from 100 countries, gathered to discuss “The Fourth Industrial Revolution.”
Television media, tasked with covering the Forum,
were awed by Davos' Alpine majesty. Even the
snow-phobic, they advised, should consider eastern
Switzerland in winter.
Davos has long been a place of pilgrimage.
Originally a remote village, dating from 1213,
Davos' geography was its destiny. The town, the
highest in the Alps at 5,120 feet, enjoys its own
microclimate. From the 1860s onward, Davos' air
seemed beneficial to tuberculosis (TB) sufferers.
Within Davos' TB clinics, Alexander Spengler, a
German-Swiss physician, developed new therapies.
Writer Thomas Mann, inspired by the experiences of
TB
patients,
penned
his
renowned “The Magic Mountain.”
