Opinion:
This political cartoon is based on the controversial Charter Affirming The Values Of Secularism And The Religious Neutrality Of The State, As Well As The Equality Of Men And Women, And The Framing Of Accommodation Requests, commonly called the Charter of Values. I chose this cartoon because it has been an issue that’s been in the news recently. While Quebec is introducing this charter, in France, they are also moving ahead with a law to ban religious symbols in school. I think that this interference in citizens’ daily lives is alarming, to say the least. The Prime Minister’s Office has stated that if Quebec passsed the Charter, they could face legal action at the Supreme Court of Canada. The reason that this issue has been discussed at length is because it brings up the question, should the state have any control on the religious aspects of Canadian citizens?
