In a world gone digital, at Culturego we believe that there is something special about print, about handwriting and the longevity attached to paper. We also believe that in Trinidad and Tobago, we actually do enjoy 4 cultural seasons, where we experience our natural and creative environment differently. Depending on the time of year, the weather, the flowers in bloom, mangoes or limes in season, the ambient colour palette, different music in the air, kites flying high....it’s a different moment in time. Our creatives also produce work year round: be it with mud and paint for J’ouvert, bedazzled costumes at Carnival, new books, poetry, Jazz, Film, Fashion or Parang... at the end, this is what our seasons look, feel and taste like. For us, the Caribbean is: more than a string of tiny touristic islands, with sunny beaches, parties and rum punch…(we do that for sure, but how about changing that superficial narrative?) Culturego sees the Caribbean as a creative space where we, its inhabitants have our own stories to tell. Our collective and unique history has informed the way in which our creatives have documented and interpreted our stories. The Caribbean is: full of artists, creatives and a million possibilities. Last of all, the Caribbean is a creative landscape to be enjoyed without moderation: in Creole, Dutch, Dialect, English, French, Papiamento, Patois, Spanish... Because it’s a new year, we’d like you to Look Outside, Learn & Discover new ways to have fun. Take in Fresh Air, have a conversation, play, dance! Get Culturedazed! 23 24 Culturego Magazine is almost 4 years old and we are excited to share our passion for the Arts with you, in a companion book/ guide format which you can carry around, we hope everywhere! DESTINIES WITH BARE HANDS Brendon O’Brien Through this magazine, Culturego renews our commitment to the development and sustainability of the creative industry here in Trinidad and Tobago. Today more than ever, the worldwide economic downturn reminds us of the need to be resilient, innovative and more creative in our approach to our collective future. In 2018, our wealth can no longer be limited to money: our wealth is the sum total of our history, our cultural and artistic heritage, our stories, our uniqueness, our Artists and our Creatives. That is GOLD. Each one of us should be proud to invest our time, energy and money in what is ours. That is the mission of a Cultural Pioneer. Welcome to Culturego Magazine, Issue #1. Enjoy.
