Paige M . Porrett , MD , PhD
PAIGE M . PORRETT , MD , PHD Vera Hauptfeld-Dolejsek , PhD , Endowed Professorship in Transplant Immunology
Dr . Porrett is a professor of Surgery , director of Clinical and Translational Research for the UAB Comprehensive Transplant Institute ( CTI ), and the inaugural director of the CTI ’ s Vascularized Composite Allotransplantation Program . She earned her medical degree at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine before completing a residency in general surgery , a fellowship in transplantation surgery , and a PhD in immunology at the University of Pennsylvania .
Dr . Porrett joined UAB in 2020 to establish the fourth uterus transplant program in the United States and the first in the southeast . Her NIHfunded immunology laboratory studies maternal immune cell fate and function during pregnancy in both human and animal models . A national and international leader in the field of uterus transplantation , Dr . Porrett is a founding member of the United States Uterus Transplant Consortium and a board member for the International Society of Uterus Transplantation .

CARLTON J . YOUNG , MD , FACS Mark H . Deierhoi , MD , Endowed Professorship
Dr . Young is a professor of Surgery and has served as director of the UAB Pancreas Transplant Program . He received his medical degree at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine before completing a general surgery residency at Thomas Jefferson University and an abdominal transplant fellowship at the University of Wisconsin .
Dr . Young joined UAB in 1997 and became director of the Pediatric Renal Transplant Program in 2011 . In 2012 , he became assistant dean for Medical Student Diversity and Inclusion in the UAB School of Medicine .
Dr . Young ’ s interests include defining and addressing disparities in outcomes and access to care among minority populations . His clinical research focuses on kidney and pancreas transplant recipients and vascular access outcomes , and he ’ s also involved in research pertaining to underrepresented minorities in medicine – especially their access to and retention in medical school . uabmedicine . org / refertransplant 7
