PHILANTHROPY AT WORK
Endowments are long-term investments in UAB , held in perpetuity , that provide scholarships , support funds , and other benefits to faculty and students year after year . Some donors create unrestricted endowments that are used for the highest priority needs on campus and provide flexibility as these needs change . Others choose to direct their gifts by endowing a chair or professorship in the academic discipline that inspired them , creating scholarships or fellowships for deserving students , or supporting medical research of particular importance to them . Endowed gifts also give donors the opportunity to have their names or the name of a loved one linked to an area of the university .
An endowed position is among the highest honors that an academic institution can bestow on a faculty member . It recognizes the recipient ’ s accomplishments , safeguards time and resources for future scholarly and research endeavors , and offers the institution a powerful tool for recruiting and retaining top talent .
