Lighting and Rendering
With the Lighting and Rendering, I collaborated with another student called Malachi who is very good
at what he does. In the beginning I asked him to light and render both the Exterior Scene and the Room
Scene. When he had a look at the scene I passed to him, he knew it was a lot of work to do because of
the textures; I had not included the AO maps, Diffusion maps or Displacement map – only the texture
and bump map.
Originally, he had intended to render through Unreal Engine, but there was a problem with the rig of
the girl due to the hierarchy in the outliner being separate and Unreal Engine could not recognise that
in order to process it. So we went on to discussing the use of VRay which I was happy with. However,
when I sat down with him and Dan to properly collaborate on what needed to be completed before the
deadline, he admitted that he could not completed the lighting and texturing of the Exterior Scene. To
be honest, I am to blame as I did not include all the other maps in order to complete the render and it is
a massive project with many buildings and props, much more than the environment of the room. But I
needed both scene, therefore I told him to focus on only the Room Scene and I would focus on lighting
and rendering the Exterior Scene through Rendercore.
Alas, when Malachi discussed with me about removing most of the props and texture, I was taken aback
as that was not how I had envisioned my project to look. However, Malachi had made a very good point
about the time we had left and him not being able to complete it by the deadline. I gave the okay,
agreeing that we would include all the textures and props for the degree show. I gave him the new
animation, replacing the old animation and gave him the creative freedom, outline that the scene should
have sunset look, and the props that should stay is the fireplace, the gears, the table and the lamps.

Malachi sent it back to me,
completely rendered and lighted
and I was very pleased with his
work. He was brilliant at what he
does and hoped he had been able
to do the same with the Exterior
Scene before the degree show.
However, he handed me the
rendered version of the old
animation of my room scene, not
my new one, and I was
disappointed.
I explained the situation with my tutor about the old animation going into my final cut, worrying that it
was completely wrong. The solution was to provide two different videos; one as a playblast with all my
new animation and another for Malachi skill as a lighting and rendering artist.
