Why were all of these women in such revolt? Why didn’t they just turn to God first?

Maillard:“The women were breaking in and snatching papers that they claimed they would burn because they said that ‘this is all the council had done since the revolution started and that they would do better.’ It seems they had lost their faith, but why are you bringing Christ into this?”

How did you try to stop the mob? What happened?

Maillard: “I received word that a number of women had arrived with torches to burn the papers in the building, so he dashed out, flung himself upon these women and snatched the burning torches out of their hands. Nearly costing me my life. I tried to get them to send a deputation to the council to demand justice and to describe their plight in word instead of this rash reaction.”

So after all of this commotion, how did you end up leading these women on their march to Versaille?

Maillard: “They took me to be their leader and I didn’t disagree. Then along the way the women would distruct fronts of homes and bang on doors to be let in and wishing to prevent the ruin of the inhabitants I gave the order to halt and told them that they would only be hurting themselves by behaving in such a manner and that if they continued to do so I would no longer march at their head, and that their actions would be looked on unfavorably, whereas if they proceeded peaceably and honestly, all the citizens of the capital would be grateful to them.”
