CRICKET CLUB
Article provided by Chairman Steward Bunting
N
North Runcton Cricket
Club was established
in the village of North
Runcton in 1935 and
ever since cricket has been played on
“The Green” in idyllic surroundings,
on one of the premier grounds in
Norfolk.
The club runs two sides on a
Saturday in the Norfolk Alliance
League, two sides on a Sunday in
the Mid Norfolk League, as well
as entering the major Norfolk cup
competitions; at youth level we run
sides at U12, U14 and U16.
I have been with the club 40 years,
having joined as a youth player in
1975. At the time the club was the
strongest in West Norfolk and had
some of the best facilities in Norfolk.
By the mid-1980s we had become one
of the strongest sides in Norfolk and I
feel proud and privileged to have been
part of that. However what has kept
me at the club is the strong family and
social spirit of the club.
Being new to the role I am finding
the biggest challenge is mixing my
busy work life with the demands of
the role of Chairman. When I took
on the role I felt that we needed more
emphasise on the playing side as the
off field part of the club is already
running very successfully.
Unfortunately our Saturday 1st
team were relegated from the Premier
League last season which was a real
blow being only the second time we
have been out of the top league since
we joined in the 1970s (we came
straight back up the following year).
However, this is a young side led by
a young inexperienced Captain and I
am looking forward to working closely
with him over the coming seasons to
get us back to the top flight. I have
every confidence that we will bounce
back quickly.
It also great to see the number of
juniors we get at coaching and playing
in our youth section and moving up to
play senior cricket. This was reflected
in our Saturday 2nd team last year
where a blend of young and “not so
young” almost secured promotion
losing out in the last game of the
season.
Our Sunday League cricket sides
are both development sides with
the aim of giving players from the
youth teams the chance to play senior
cricket in what tends to be a more
relaxed atmosphere which gives them
experience before moving to the more
competitive Saturday cricket.
With 2014 being a “mixed bag”
with regards to results our aim for
2015 is that the Saturday 1st team get
promotion back to the Premier League
and that the Saturday 2nd team push
for promotion whilst also advancing
some of our junior members. The
Sunday Leagues will continue to be
used to develop the youth of the club
but it would be good for us to have a
good cup run which we have struggled
to do in the last few years.
