High School Courses Taken at the Middle School
The State Board of Education passed a policy that allows middle school students in grades 6-8 to fulfill graduation requirements for high school mathematics , world language , science , social studies and English I courses taken in middle school . Currently , CCS only offers courses in mathematics at the middle school . Accelerated students may elect to take science and / or social studies credits online while in the middle school . While these courses meet the graduation requirement , they do not count towards the numner of credits needed for high school graduation . To fulfill the requirement , students must pass the course and score a Level III or IV on any EOC associated with the course , if applicable . The course must conform to the high school course of study . The courses will count toward graduation requirements , but the students ’ GPA will only be computed with courses taken during the high school years .
Students transferring to CCS from an out-of-state middle school with high school credit listed on their transcripts will be given credit for the high school courses meeting N . C . graduation requirements .
Requirements for a High School Certificate of Achievement / Graduation Certificate
Alternative students who have completed all graduation requirements of the Alternative Course of Study except the competitive hours of employment may exit school with a Certificate of Achievement and transcript . Upon completion of the competitive hours of employment requirements , the student would then receive a high school diploma .
High School Athletic Eligibility Standards
Board policy 4500 - All students participating in interscholastic activity must carry student accident insurance available through the system or provide evidence of comparable coverage . Students participating in interscholastic athletics must complete an annual physical examination by a licensed physician .
All students participating in interscholastic activity must be present in school for at least half of the instructional day in order to participate in activities or practices , except where specifically exempted by a physician . Other exemptions may be granted by the principal of each school based on the attendance policy . Students serving an out of school suspension or assigned to In-School Suspension ( ISS ) or participating in an alternative to suspension program shall not participate in interscholastic activities or practices during the assigned time and may regain eligibility the next day following completion of the suspension or other related discipline programs . All students participating in co-curricular activities and athletics shall meet promotion requirements according to the board ’ s Student Promotion and Accountability policy . On a 4 x 4 Block , students must pass 3 out of 4 courses in a semester . Students will be required to pass three blocks in the spring term and must meet local promotion standards in order to be eligible for the following fall term . � No student may be approved for any athletic contest if his / her 19th birthday is on or before August 1 st of that school year . � Summer school work used to make up part of the minimum requirements may be applied to the spring term in order to determinie fall eligibility .
� Senior athletes are discouraged from taking study hall or early release as this could negatively impact their athletic eligibility . In addition to the foregoing provisions , students who participate in interscholastic athletics shall meet all requirements of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association and the State Board of Education
