SCIENCE
UNC System schools require at least one life or biological science, one physical science, and one lab science. NC graduation requirements meet this minimum requirement. An exception to this is the University of South Carolina in Columbia. Earth Environmental Science and Physical Science will not meet their minimum admissions requirement. Students considering this university will need an additional science course from what is required for high school graduation.
Earth / Environmental Science
Grade 9
1 Unit
Prerequisite: None
This environmental education course explores the areas of ecology, geology, meteorology, oceanography, and astronomy. Based on
the NC Essential Standards for Instruction, the course will investigate the earth in terms of the lithosphere, hydrosphere,
atmosphere, and biosphere. Man’ s impact on processes will be examined.
Honors Earth / Environmental Science Grade 9 1 Unit Prerequisite:“ A” or“ B” in 8 th grade science, teacher recommendation Honors Earth / Environmental Science is a rigorous curriculum designed to allow highly motivated students to conduct an in-depth investigation of earth and environmental sciences. The impacts of human activities on earth systems will be a focus as students study ecology, geology, oceanography, and astronomy. Students will be expected to work independently on a variety of assignments and accept greater responsibility for their learning.
Biology
Grade 10
1 Unit
Prerequisite: Earth / Environmental Science
Biology is the study of life. Subject content is based on the NC Essential Standards and includes: scientific inquiry, observation and
research, ecology, cellular structures and functions, bio-energetic reactions, genetics and molecular basis of heredity, evolution,
characteristics and life functions of a variety of living organisms, animal behavior, disease and immunity. Students will take the NC
End of Course Test upon completion of the course.
Honors Biology Grade 10 1 Unit Prerequisite:“ A” or“ B” in Earth / Environmental Science, teacher recommendation Honors Biology is designed to give the student a more challenging and in-depth experience of the NC Essential Standards. Students are expected to work independently on a variety of assignments and accept greater responsibility for their learning. They may be asked to design and carry out several independent investigations of biological questions, read and report on recent research in biology and demonstrate a more in-depth conceptual understanding of all biology objectives. Suggested ways to develop this more in-depth understanding are embedded in the content for Honors Biology. Students will take the NC End of Course Test upon completion of the course.
Pre-AP Biology Honors Grade 11, 12 1 Unit Prerequisite:“ A” or“ B” in Honors Biology and Honors Chemistry, teacher recommendation This course allows student the option to explore specific topics such as cell biology, genetics, and evolution with more depth and detail than 10 th grade Biology. This course precedes the companion AP Biology course in the spring. Students who take this course will acquire a foundation of knowledge and skills needed for science classes at the college level.
Biology II-AP
Grade 11, 12
1 Unit
Prerequisite: Pre AP Biology Credit
AP Biology is an opportunity for high school students to engage in college-level biology content and lab work. It aims to provide
students with the conceptual framework, factual knowledge, and analytical skills necessary to deal critically with the rapidly
changing science of biology. An Advanced Placement Exam will be administered at the end of the course and certain scores on the
exam can earn college credit.
