Late Night Games - A College Essay
It’s late at night, the screen so bright it’s lighting up the dark room around me to a dim
glow. As I sit there, I listen to the music I play on Listen On Repeat, and simultaneously, the
noises of the house so late at night. I’m waiting for my friend to get back on Skype, and I’m
playing ROBLOX (a game) at full graphics. The computer is slightly laggy, and the random
feedback noise from Skype rings in my ears. There’s still silence as I’m going through this round
though. Each round consists of four minutes to survive, and not die, or to do these things like
shoot at targets or sword fight with other players. Jumping around the game’s map was a
challenge because of the enormous amount of objects falling from the sky. I hear my friend
come back. Sam joins the round and joins into the round right in the middle of the map, right as
it’s being exploded. I am in a corner now, trying to avoid the falling objects. Limbs and broken
objects are everywhere: piano keys, violin strings, dog parts and cakes and pies; they all
explode on impact and as I look up to see the counter for the time left, I cheer. I finally survived
a round!
Sam and I rejoice over Skype and talk about what happened and how funny it was at a
given point during the round. It’s the end of the round, and I’m the only one standing in this
virtual world. But the time is already 10:45 PM. And on a school night too. I still want to play
more, so that’s what I end up doing. I fight with my conscience on what I knew was right and
what I shouldn’t do, and I let the shouldn’t- do side win. Sam and I play another round.
Fortunately for Sam, she was on winter break; unlike me. Occasionally during rounds, we would
get up to get food and the restroom. Other than that, we were up all night. I had dirty dishes next
