Feature Article: Memior of Summer Reyes

My name is Summer Reyes, if there were one thing that I am really good at it would be basketball. I look back at the same day that I had my biggest accomplishment in basketball ever over and over in my head. The day I knew I would play basketball no matter what the rest of my life, the day I knew I not only had a passion for basketball but a need for it in my life. Never in my life had I ever truly accomplished any thing remotely note worthy. This day would make he beginning of my basketball career. I remember it like it was yesterday.
It was my freshmen year of high school the 6th game of the season. I remember I was so nervous because my real dad was coming and usually I never talk to him. He really was only coming because my sister had asked him to. Also it was the first game my step dad said he would most likely be able to come to. He is a truck driver so it is unpredictable when he will get back depending on traffic and what not. Now all I had to do was make sure I didn’t look like a fool. I wanted my dads to see that I was good at something. I didn’t want them to be ashamed of me for not being able to play basketball.
My team was warming up and I remember looking around for my step dad I wanted him to come so bad. The boy’s team did not have a game that day and this would be the first game of ours they’d be able to come to. All of them were telling us how we were going to lose because we all sucked. I was really mad but during warm ups I was hitting my shots so I felt good about myself.
The game was about to start and I did not see my step dad anywhere but I did see my real dad so I was happy about that.
We were in the huddle and my coach told me that I would do jump ball today due to one of my teammates being injured. I usually started but rarely did jump ball so I was excited. The ref blew the whistle signaling we needed to get on the court now. I set up for the jump ball and right as I shook the girls hand I had seen my step dad walk in I was pumped. The ref blew the whistle and threw the ball up my team got the ball and we set up in our play. Right of the back I shot a three pointer and made it nothing but net. I knew that this would be an awesome game and boy was I right.
My coach had put me as point guard and I was executed the plays well. When I needed to drive I drove and made the basket, when it came down to it I got to business done. During half time I ran up and hugged my step dad and thanked him for coming and supporting me I also thanked my real dad then I had to go to the locker room when I walked in I got applauded. My coach and teammates told me what a wonderful job I was doing and to keep it up. I was very proud of myself and I kept my head held high but I didn’t gloat or brag. As a captain of the team I knew it was my job to also give praise to other people because it was not just me doing a wonderful job I had a team to help me too.
