ADOPT A SCHOOL RADON PROGRAM
The Adopt A School Radon program is a public-private effort to help improve indoor air quality of public schools in the U.S. By matching the financial contributions of private sector partners, who wish to “adopt”a school to implement a radon testing and mitigation project, a greater number of children and youth will experience improved air quality.
This radon school sponsorship program begins with an institutional evaluation that identifies the current state of the school, prioritizes needs, and creates a work plan using NRPP-ANSI standards. The program works directly with each participating school's teachers and administration to provide training, testing and, mitigation services. The ultimate goal is to improve air quality for any educational facility with radon test result readings above the action level of 4 pCi/L (picoCuries per liter) - the level
at which EPA recommends that schools take action to reduce
the level.
The program will establish alliances with the private sector to sponsor public schools to improve the radon air quality of students. School principals will receive technical assistance to implement the school facilities administration and planning.
