Me: Radon, I need to take your picture?
Radon: How come you need my picture?
Me: I am writing an article about you and
about Hunter Hollow Bunny Bed and Breakfast.
Radon: Is it for Bun Culture Today?
Me: No, it is for a people magazine by Citizens
for Radioactive Radon Reduction.
Radon: I would be more excited about Bun Culture Today, but okay. Why do they want to know about me? Oh, wait, my name is Radon,
and they are all about Radon…But why is my
name Radon?
Hunter Hollow Bunny Bed and Breakfast is a wildlife rehab center and a domestic rabbit rescue in East Syracuse, NY. It was started in 2017 by Annie-Laurie Hunter, who is also a NYS licensed Home Inspector and NRPP certified radon tester.
Over the past 6 years the domestic rabbit rescue has grown from 5 bunnies at a time to upwards of 170 bunnies at one time. Most domestic bunnies arrive because their families are no longer able
to take care of them, there are allergies or medical conditions that preclude the family keeping the bunny, or the bunny has been found wandering
in neighborhoods. Some bunnies arrive pregnant so we have baby bunnies like Radon.
Hunter Hollow has a seemingly endless stream of bunnies so every 6 months the naming theme is
changed so we can keep track of when bunnies
arrived, and we never duplicate names. There have been abolitionists and suffragists, things the world needs more of, verbs, prepositions, adjectives, and the latest is element in order of atomic number.
Radon: The atomic number for Radon is 86. Does that mean there were 85 bunnies here before me?
Me: Yes, 85 were named before you and it is quite possible that we will run out of elements before we run out of bunnies this year.
Radon: You will have 118 bunnies that arrived in just 6 months?
Me: Yes. We currently have over 150 bunnies here and we have had almost that many adoptions so far this year so, and we have had to turn away nearly 100 bunniesbecause we don’t have space for them. So, our next naming theme will need to have more than 150 members.
Radon: I guess I was lucky to get in…it is pretty nice here… if people want to help us, what can they do?
Hunter Hollow is an all volunteers, 501 c3 organization. The adoption fees cover the cost of the spays/ neuters and the vaccinations, but everything else is paid for through donations. Donations can be sent directly to us or can be made through our Facebook page or our website: www.HunterHollow.org.
One way everyone can help all bunny rescues is to encourage people adopt rather than shopping for a bunny, spaying and neutering all pet rabbits and never having more than one un-spayed or neutered bunny in a household.
