Harrisburg University Integrative Sciences Student Research
Sciences major and the title of my project is the relationship between historical redlining zones and proximity to degrees city of Harrisburg Pennsylvania so green space is very very important for mental health as well as a decrease in prevalence of cancer as well as heat related illnesses so what I was looking at was redlining is it was a discriminatory practice in the 1930s that denied home and business loans to African-Americans poor families and immigrant families and this allowed for the unprecedented development of Highways industrial buildings streets payment and which caused a decrease in the amount of vegetation available in Syria and so my project looked at the benefits that looked at these effects of red lighting as of today and whether Green Space was available and the proximity to Green Space the city and according to the CDC the residents should be at least 0.5 miles which in Green Space which is what producers should be available so to study this we took a boundary
a city boundaries as well as the overlayed some real learning districts from this map over here as well and we did a completion distance layer to study some really relationship between voice-based proximity and Redline areas and was that while each Zone was and within the 0.5 mile recommendation there is a trend that is statistically significant that shows that as the hloc grade gets warmer so green beans the best moving static yellow being declining and red being hazardous there is a significant distance disparity in music and so is also possible to question the quality of green space as well so
if you could look at this map over here Italian Lake Park is in your green and blue areas and then fourth and Emerald Park was in your red and yellow areas so there's a clear difference between types of vegetation space size and opportunity to learn about the park versus just sticking a park in the city in the space of creed and so this causes a question and for future reference and research to study Community investment in parks in this Redbox areas in order to build them up gifts kids in these red lines disenfranchises low socioeconomic Community opportunities to interact with the space around them all right so This research is important to me in my in my career because I'm looking to go into the public health sector and my interest is mainly focused on environmental health especially epigenetics and how the environment can affect us on a molecular level and so looking at Redline districts and under-- standing the environmental constraints that these communities are exposed to because of racist practices and policy it's important to understand a lot about health about the health of our communities as well as the health of foreign lack access to things that could help them such as Green Space.
