Malaysian Fashion Week in
Full Colour
By Jehan Ara Khonat, Creative Director at My
Online Souk
In Malaysia, on and off the runway, all I saw was
colour and life. My eyes danced across the
beauty of the scenery, the friendliness of the
people and the spectacular fashion. Malaysia’s
vibrant atmosphere made it the perfect place
for a Fashion Week bringing together over 100
designers from over 15 countries to show case
to a global audience.
I attended the Malaysian Fashion Week (MFW) with my sister, Sabeena,
on behalf of My Online Souk in order to explore a place that has been
doing modest fashion much longer than we have, in a climate much
hotter than ours’ and for their insight into modest fashion. It was our
vision to bring something new and exciting to our buyers in order to
refresh the love and confidence of modest dress. Without a doubt, it
was even more inspiring than we imagined and there is a lot in the
works from us for 2017.
Malaysia hosts three main cultures, Malay, Chinese and Indian,
making it a melting pot of delightful new things. With approximately
60% of the population being Muslim, their modest fashion industry
has been on the rise. The collaboration between the Malaysia
External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), STYLO
International, Mercedes Benz and Modestyle brought about the
nation’s biggest lifestyle and fashion event, MFW.
