LAND Landscaping Design ½ credit semester Elective In this class the students will be introduced to the elements of home and commercial landscaping. After learning basic techniques, students will make use of a CAD based design program used in the industry today. Students will also utilize digital cameras to take pictures of their home and develop a landscape plan. In addition to design, students will gain knowledge of shrubs and trees commonly used in the landscape. Anyone interested in landscaping, drafting, or designing their own landscape would benefit from this class. BIOTECH Biotechnology I ½ credit semester Elective In this class students will explore applications of biotechnology after reviewing cells and DNA. Applications in the world of animals, plants, and at the environment will be discussed. Students will have a chance to spool their own DNA, do a crime scene investigation, and study one of the fastest growing career fields today. This class counts toward the ½ credit Science Elective requirement for graduation. Prerequisite: Biology BIOTEII Biotechnology II ½ credit semester Elective In this class student will explore the application of biotechnology in animal reproduction. Students will also discuss bacteria and viruses and how they are used in biotechnology and have labs connected to exploring how bacteria are used to make pharmaceuticals. Students will also evaluate the ethics of biotechnology. This class counts toward the ½ credit Science Elective requirement for graduation. Prerequisite: Biotechnology I YAAG Youth Apprenticeship Agricultural ½ credit semester Elective If the student is serious about a career in the Agriscience area, then this program is for them. This program involves being enrolled in courses that allow the student to gain the competencies needed for Plant Science or Animal Science. Plant science includes positions in horticulture (landscaping and greenhouse) and Animal science includes Veterinary Technician. Students interested in Plant Science need to enroll in Plant Science. Students interested in Animal Science need to enroll in Animal Science I & II and Veterinary Science. Students must complete 450 hours of work experience and attain the competencies to obtain the Agriscience Youth Apprenticeship Certificate. Students that are interested in this program must contact the Guidance Office for an application form and to be enrolled initially, pending employment. 16
