Animal Science** Interested in Animal Production, or thinking about a career in the animal or health industry? This class is for you! Come with us as we take an actual look into the reproductive system of a cow or learn about artificial insemination. We will study the anatomy, digestion, reproduction, health, disease, and management of beef, dairy, swine, sheep, horses, goats, and poultry. Students will learn the science behind the animal’s body systems through various weekly hands-on laboratory activities. This class will assist the student interested in veterinary, vet-tech, medical or other biological careers. Advanced Animal Science* (New Course) (Cum Laude Recognition) An advanced paced, college preparatory course designed to instill the basic principles of animal science. Concepts stress through lab and lecture with a strong emphasis placed on hands-on inquiry based learning. Topics to include: animal management strategies, animal records, genetics, animal environment, animal anatomy and physiology, body condition, and feedstuffs. Biotechnology** Starting with the basics of cells and DNA, students will have the opportunity to spool their own DNA, investigate genetically modified products, as well as address important issues such as gene therapy, genetically modified foods, stem cell research, and the use of DNA profiling through forensic science. If you are interested in one of these fast growing fields through a career in biotechnology, medicine, or forensic science then this advanced class will benefit you. Fish and Wildlife Conservation Explore the great outdoors! Students will study administration of Fish and Wildlife Management, hunting and fishing regulations are studied as well as habitat of those animals. National and State Wildlife Refuges are studied as well as animal migratory habits. Students look at endangered species and contributing factors as well as learn the basics of wild fish population. As the baby boomers get older, the jobs in the DNR will open for these students. Career areas will be discussed. Find out what it takes to get a job in the great outdoors or just appreciate them a little more. Food Science I** This course is designed to provide students with knowledge and practical experience in the mass production of fruits, vegetables, and grain products. In this course, students will be making food products such as salsa, jelly, jams, pickles, bread, and beverages. Students will also experiment and create new food products that are not mass marketed in the food industry. Eating is part of the course. This course involves field trips, processing labs of food products, contests and quality control techniques for consumers. This course is for students interested in a career in the food industry.
