COURSE : Modern Studies : National 4 / 5 Introductory Statement The purpose of Modern Studies is to develop learners ‟ knowledge and understanding of contemporary political and social issues in local , Scottish , United Kingdom and international contexts . In these contexts , learners will develop an awareness of the social and political issues they will meet in their lives .
Aims & Objectives Modern Studies makes a distinctive contribution to the curriculum by drawing on the social sciences of politics , sociology and economics as well as other disciplines .
The main aims of this Course are to enable learners to : engage as active and informed members of society and local and global citizens have an appreciation of the changing nature of modern society understand and respect human and legal rights and responsibilities as well as democratic modes of government understand the democratic process and the ways in which people are informed about , and participate in , society
have an awareness of social and economic issues at local , Scottish , national and international levels and ways of addressing needs and inequalities be aware of different views about the extent of state involvement in society be aware of the nature and processes of conflict resolution at all levels Course Content Units of study could include : Democracy in Scotland , including the opportunity to visit the Scottish parliament Social Issues in the UK , which will examine the nature of social inequality among those such as ; types of family , age , ethnic and income groups A contemporary world power such as the USA or EU – examining socio-economic and political issues Skills Developed Use a range of sources , of evidence which are mostly straightforward but may have some complex features in order to : detect and explain bias exaggeration and selectivity in the use of facts make and justify decisions draw and justify valid conclusions
Assessment Pupil work will be continually assessed in a variety of ways and feedback on progress will be shared throughout S3 and S4 . Continuous assessment of classwork and unit test scores will be used by Teachers to ensure pupils are embarking upon the correct level as they enter the Senior Phase in S4 . At the end of S4 , pupils will be involved in formal SQA assessments which may involve exams , project work , or a combination of both , depending upon the subject and level of study . Progression Routes Pupils will progress from Third and Fourth Level outcomes into Access 3 , National 4 , or National 5 depending upon progress made throughout S3 . They will then be formally presented at this level at the end of S4 . Pupils may return to school into S5 and S6 where they can progress to Higher and Advanced Higher qualifications .
