Daniel Defoe wrote in the 18th century “we came to Quarn or Quarden. A little ragged, but noted village, where there is a famous chalybeat spring, to which an abundance of people go in the season to drink the water”. It’s not ragged anymore, that’s for sure, but is a very pretty village. Duffield is on the A6, 5 miles further north and historically was mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086.
