484H

At each club meeting, members recite the 4-H Pledge which states “I pledge my Head to clearer thinking, my Heart to greater loyalty, my Hands to larger service, and my Health to better living for my club, my community, my country, and my world.” Each year, 4-H Clubs across Kansas put the “Hands to larger service” in action by participating in 48 Hours of 4-H (#484H). A 4-H Council may coordinate a county-wide activity or clubs may take on a service project of their own during October.

While 2020 has certainly presented challenges in many traditional community service projects such as helping at food banks or soup kitchens, there are many ways to be creative in community service.

These can include:

Sweeping a neighbor’s sidewalk

Making a meal or dessert for a friend or family member

Picking up a sidewalk or park

Organizing a fundraising drive for coats, canned goods, or HUGS (hats, gloves,

underwear, and socks)

Volunteering at an animal shelter

Planting trees or plants in your community

Making time blankets, pillows, and other bedding for a local shelter or a care facility

Volunteering to read at a local library

Community Service can be a one-time event such as a park cleanup. It can also be a series of volunteer opportunities such as delivering meals on a regular schedule. We encourage 4-H members to be aware of the world around them and look for opportunities to help. This awareness of needs and recognition of helping others is a step toward our next generation of community leaders and volunteers.
