The 2021 wheat crop had a conducive environment for the development of Fusarium head blight (head scab) in many areas of Kansas, including our area. This disease can reduce germination dramatically in some cases, as well as makes reading and understanding a germination test much more difficult. Having your seed professionally tested for germination is always a good practice, but in this instance, it is highly recommended.

To have an official germination test on the seed, send a two-pound sample to:

Kansas Crop Improvement Association

2000 Kimball Ave.

Manhattan, KS 66502

A germination test will cost $19.00 and a sample submittal form can be printed off from the KCIA website: www.kscrop.org/seed-lab.html  If you need additional info. they can be reached at 785-532-6118.

To view Kansas State University Research & Extension Centers wheat performance tests and our Cottonwood Extension wheat demo. plot tests, go to www.cottonwood.ksu.edu click on Crops and Livestock and look under Hot Topics for the links.

Colorado State University compiles all the wheat performance test information from Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma, and Wyoming.  I recommend this tool for evaluating wheat variety performance across multiple site-years.
