Sunday 1st December saw the last RTV of the 2013 Season and the title decider.
Three drivers went in to the event with the chance to take the top spot, and the
top four places still able to change. With David White and Ross Lillicrap setting up
the event thus taking the maximum amount of 60 points it meant Ken Brain and
Gavin Earnshaw had to make sure they were on top form.
After the morning’s driver briefing and cake presentation to birthday boy Chris
Cuming, the event got underway. The groups of regular, new and returning RTV
crews headed off with one group heading out alongside the river, with the other
crossing the river and going up the hill to the opening. The sections were laid out
in a straight forward way, and barring silly mistakes most crews should have been
able to get to the low numbers. Ken got off to a solid start in his group, and like
most of the others getting all the way down to the one on the first section. Tony
Powell being the only main exception, when he was one of the first to go, getting
caught out with a nine score.
“Thank you to all who set up and marshalled at Newnham RTV today, had a great time
and my best score ever” – Paul Abery (via Facebook)
In the other group again everyone got off to good starts, however Gavin caught a
four cane on the first section, not a great start on what would turn out to be a low
scoring day. The day could have easily got worse for Ken on the third section
when he was first on and had it not been for a bank of mud he would have picked
up a ten. Mike Smerdon, who was out to play in Ross Lillicrap's 90, as a thank
you to Mike allowing him to use his CCV motor, soon got back into the swing of
RTV'ing, but it would be young Tony Higgins, Pete Alexander and Kim Dobinson
who were tied for the lead at lunch time both on all clears.
