The last two games were both
high scoring matches with the
Sovereign Insurance Rock
Scorpions beating an under
strength Nature Group Europa
Stormers by 66 points to 10. It
was a fast flowing game with a
total of 12 tries, with both
teams cancelling each other
out in the first 20 minutes,
before the Scorpions took
control and romped home, the
worthy winners.
Remarkably, the other game,
between the Kedhlow Gibraltar
Bay Buccaneers and the
InLine Framing Straits Sharks,
also consisted of 12 tries, but
it was a much more even
contest. Right up until 10
minutes from the end it was
neck and neck, at 25 all, before
the Sharks broke the deadlock
running in three unanswered
tries to win the game 42 points
to 25.
The Scorpions won the Cup
last season, their first piece of
silverware, and have been the
dominant team this season,
having won six of their seven
games. They now have an
unassailable lead in the league
and will be crowned
champions at the last league
game of the season on 18th
February. As an indication of
the competitiveness of the
league, however, all Clubs
have now been crowned
Champions at least once in the
last six years, and last year’s
winners, the Buccaneers, are
currently trailing in last place.
The Cup competition begins
on 3rd March, with the final on
the 17th of the same month,
and it will be interesting to see
if the Scorpions can win the
double.
All the games this season
have been played at Victoria
Stadium, which has been great
for Gibraltar Rugby, meaning
that the games have been
open to spectators, and proper
posts have been in place for
conversions and penalties.
Due to the Representative
game against Jersey on 6th
February, we have postponed
Round 8 of the League to 11th
February, and this game will
now be played at the Devils
Tower Camp (DTC).
