Personnel administering a “High Alert” medication should read and understand all administration instructions before administering to a patient. 4. A list of CSAH “High Alert” drugs is located on the outside of the Cubex units. 5. Once a “High Alert” medication is drawn up, a label must be placed on the syringe indicating the name of the medication. All pre-labeled labels are located in the Cubex unit with the medication. 6. The label should be placed on the syringe covering the cap of the needle AND the syringe. 2. Caution Alert Medications are injectable medications that have specific instructions for administration; example: dilution, give slowly, or give as a CRI. 3. Once a Caution Alert medication is drawn up, a label must be placed on the syringe indicating the name of the medication. All pre-labeled labels are located in the Cubex unit with the medication. D. Non-Caution Medications 1. All Non-Caution medications are injectable medications that are considered NOT to be dangerous to the patient (unless misused). There are no special instructions to be followed before administering. 2. All Non-Caution medications are labeled with a GREEN label. Once medication is drawn up, a label must be placed on the syringe indicating the name of the medication. All pre-labeled labels are located in the Cubex unit with the medication. III. DOSE A. Doses should be calculated at least two times before creating an order. B. Ensure that the name of medication, concentration and dose are all correct. C. Caution Alert Medications 1. All Caution Alert medications are pre-labeled with a YELLOWlabel on the bottle/vial. Inventory personnel are responsible for labeling these drugs before they are taken out of central storage and put into hospital use. C. When creating the order for a medication, be specific to drug name, drug concentration, drug dose, calculated dose in mg, quantity of drug in ml, and delivery route. Example: 1.
