Bylaws — Article III
Section 8 /
Duties of the
Editor
15
Like the name suggests , the Editor ’ s main duty is to edit the TORCH : U . S ., the national publication of the NJCL .
The Bylaws don ’ t actually specify much about this national publication , instead leaving a lot to however the NJCL wants to handle it . For example , the frequency of publication — traditionally one new issue per season — isn ’ t specified here . This flexibility offered by the Bylaws allows the NJCL to easily tweak and improve the TORCH : U . S . if necessary .
In addition to creating new issues , the Editor must also maintain an archive of all issues of TORCH : U . S ., making sure their work is added to it . This ensures that past issues can be viewed at any time .
Finally , the Editor is responsible for judging the publications contest , in which States and local chapters send in their own publications to be judged .
How do I do it ?
Note : Appointed Officers
While all of the NJCL ’ s officers are elected , some States and local chapters make their editor an appointed office . Instead of members voting for candidates in an election , a team of people ( usually certain officers or the executive board ) selects someone for the position from a list of applicants .
If you choose to have appointed officers , dedicate a spot in your constitution to go over how candidates apply and how they ’ re appointed .
First , specify the publication that your editor the editing . E . g ., “ The Editor shall edit the < State / local > publication , the < name >.”
From there , you can add more specific restrictions ( like how often a new issue must be published ) and additional duties ( like maintaining an archive of past issues or judging relevant contests ).
In a State JCL constitution , your editor should also send a state update to the NJCL Editor for each edition of the TORCH : U . S .
