The Environment

ith all the consumerism behind parenting and children, we found that less is more in raising our youth. Besides time, energy, and unconditional love, I found that the important investments in our family are in nourishing foods, holistic healing, and playing in nature.

Our diet is one of our main foundations to development, immunity, and overall well being. Although it can be difficult to change, we eat very simply. Since moving to Hawai’i, we have had to change the way we eat completely. For example, food is expensive here, so we make our meals from scratch. Also, as vegetarians, we eliminated soy, wheat and dairy. Soy contains phyto-estrogens (hormones), increases mucus, severely processed and mostly genetically modified. Wheat, as well as baby formula, creates holes in our gut, which affects our flora, our immune system and how we process the vitamins and minerals we eat. So, what do we eat? Instead, we invest in local and organic fruits, veggies, legumes, and probiotic foods. On a daily basis, we make smoothies with energy fueled bananas. Another love in our diet is a Hawaiian pro-biotic staple called “poi”, which includes taro and water and is fermented. Did you know that nearly every indigenous people make a probiotic food?

We value holistic health in our everyday living. Specifically, we use herbs, homeopaths, and essential oils. To begin with, herbal tea infusions help us with everyday nourishment, postpartum health, and medicinal use. Daily herbs we infuse include nettle, raspberry leaf, dandelion, and oat straw. Next, we started using homeopathics in circumstances of pregnancy issues, teething, and colds. Lastly, my favorite is essential oils. I make antibacterial sprays, house cleaners, body products, and internal medicine with essential oils. For instance, from the first sign of a cold, I dilute and rub essential oils on the soles of my youth’s feet, spine, chest, and ears.Additionally, this oil regimen can be used
